School of Journalism and Communication, Wuhan University derives from the Department of Journalism in 1983, School of Journalism and Communication was founded in December 2000.
Currently, school sets 4 departments, Journalism, Broadcasting and Telecommunications, Advertising, and Communication; 5 undergraduate majors and professional directions: Journalism, Communication, Broadcasting and Telecommunications, Advertising, and Broadcasting & Hosting Arts; school has right of doctoral degree-conferring to primary discipline of Journalism and Communication and five second disciplines: Journalism, Communication, and Intercultural Communication, and Advertising and Media Economic, and Digital Media; we also have five master’s degree authorized points: Journalism, and Communication, Digital Media, Theory of Radio & TV Art, and Master's degree in Journalism and Communication; we have a mobile station for postdoctoral research in Journalism and Communication; one key discipline at the provincial level: Journalism and Communication; one key research base of Humanities and Social Science which is recognized by Chinese Ministry of Education: Wuhan University’s Media Development Research Center; and we also have a State-level experimental teaching demonstration Center: Journalism and Communication Experiment Teaching Center of Wuhan University. One innovative experimental zone of talents training mode supported by Chinese Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance supports: multimedia era journalists training innovation experimental base.
The college has 61 full-time teachers , 22 professors (including 18 PhD. adviser) , 20 associate professor and lecturers. More than 90 percent of the teachers have a PhD degree as well as studying experience in foreign countries, exchanges or attending foreign conferences.In addition, the school also hired more than 50 well-known domestic and overseas journalism and communication scholars and practitioners as professors or part-time college professors.
Presently, school has more than 1500 full-time students, including about 700 undergraduates, nearly 700 master's and doctoral students.
In terms of scientific research, the school places great emphasis on innovation and development. We have formed research ideas which combine theory research, reality research, and service to national development strategies of journalism. We pay attention to the consolidated academic resources and create a series of unique areas of research, and our ability of scientific research is growing. Now, we own one "the 10th five-year plan" "211 engineering" key construction projects: News Communication and China social culture development, and one "the 11th five-year plan " "211 engineering" key construction project: social transformation and China mass media reform, and one national "985 engineering" philosophy social sciences innovation Base: News Communication and mediated society innovation base, and 1 CSSCI published sources: Journalism and Communication Comments. According to 2012 third round national subject assessment results, our comprehensive strength ranked the third (scoring the third), ranking fourth.
Our international exchange and cooperation has been expanding. We hold international academic meeting once or twice a year. We have long and stable relationship with College of Communication of Illinois University,USA , Organizational Communication Center of Universite Michel de Montaigne：Bordeaux 3, Media Research Center of the University of Sunderland, School of Politics and Communication of New Zealand University of Canterbury, South Korea Cheng Jun University’s Broadcasting Institute, College of Communication of Taiwan Ming Chuan University’s, College of Communication of Taiwan Culture University’s, Department of English Communication of City University of Hong Kong’s, School of Journalism and Communication of Chinese University of Hong Kong and so on, amount to about 30 educational and science research institutions.
We founded first country-level experimental teaching demonstration Center in media field among national Universities: Wuhan University experiment teaching Center in Journalism and Communication. The teaching facilities of the Centre are senior, with advanced professional Studio, Multimedia Editor Laboratory, Radio & TV editing laboratory, Radio and Television Studios, photography Labs, total area is 2000 square meters and there are more than 400 pieces (sets) experimental equipment, total assets of which is more than 10 million Yuan. Library area is 1000 square meters, with more than 50,000 volumes of books at home and abroad, there are Chinese and foreign newspapers and magazines more than 230 species; electronic reading room can be shared with the school library electronic resources, network and CD database available are more than 400.
In December 2013, according to the decision of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee and the Ministry of education, the school of Journalism and communication of Wuhan University, as the first group of joint construction units, was jointly constructed by the Publicity Department of Hubei provincial Party committee and Wuhan University. According to the agreement, the two sides will jointly build excellent courses, backbone teams, practice bases and research think tanks.
