Information on International Conference:China and America Media Transformation in a Changing World
本公告来自:SJC
As changes continue to occur throughout the world in the political, economic, cultural and technological spheres, the same is true in the news media realm. China has over the past twenty-five years changed greatly as it has undergone economic and social reform. Needless to say for those in China's news industry, the changes in how news is dealt with have been equally, if not more so, great. Today news professionals find themselves confronting a host of challenges and opportunities in an ever-evolving and highly competitive setting, one that defies simplistic analyses or explanations from scholars, Chinese and Western alike. Meanwhile on the other side of the Pacific, people in the American news media find themselves, particularly following 9/11, trying to sort things out anew as well. Academics and news professionals on both sides, in brief, are well aware of how their respective news industries have evolved and many of them would like to see the how the media works be made better. Indeed, today calls for media reform have become all the louder.
Given the timely interest in redoing how the news media operates, a comparison between China and America media is in order. In the Cold War era it was thought that the media systems in these two countries were guided by two radically different ideologies, but today it is obvious that neither the Chinese nor the American news industry can be neatly placed into ideological boxes. Thus the time has come to join together and review the past, describe the recent changes that have occurred over the past fifteen years and then focus attention on the critical issues of the present and for the years to come. The international conference will provide a platform for media researchers, educators and practitioners to exchange their ideas on transformations in the Chinese and American news industries over the past half century and then focus attention on the critical issues of the present and for the years to come.
